Why Cheaper Isn’t Always Better for Wedding Signage

Elegant signage should elevate your day — not add stress. Here’s how to choose the right material so your welcome boards and seating charts look premium, stay sturdy, and photograph beautifully.

Project Brief

  • Welcome boards — 60×140 cm, 2 hanging holes at the top.
  • Statement seating arrangement — 100×180 cm, 60×160 cm, 100×50 cm.
  • Timeless palette — black text/design on a white background.
  • Secure display & weighting solutions (indoor/outdoor).
Your signage works hard all day — welcome moments, photo backdrops, guest guidance. Materials matter for look, durability, and stability.

ABS vs Perspex vs ACM vs Foamboard — The Essentials

Material Pros Cons Typical Cost Look & Feel Durability Best Use
ABS Lightweight, low cost, easy to cut Scratches easily, scuffs show; can look less premium on large surfaces Low Matte/plastic look Moderate (cosmetic wear shows quickly) Temporary/backup pieces; not for hero boards
Perspex (Acrylic) Glass-like, premium, crisp print/vinyl finish Heavier; higher cost in large sizes; needs 5 mm+ for rigidity High High-gloss or matte luxe High (with correct thickness & handling) Welcome boards, premium seating charts, photo moments
ACM (Aluminium Composite) Rigid, lightweight, weather-resistant, stable in size Slightly more industrial edge unless finished; mid-to-high price Medium–High Clean, flat, pro signage look Very high (great for outdoor/large) Oversized seating plans, outdoor signs, long days
Foamboard Very light, budget-friendly, easy to hang Dents/warps easily; not weather-safe; can look less premium up close Low Matte, soft edges Low–Moderate (indoor only) Small indoor signs, short display times

Cost notes are relative; final quote depends on thickness, finish, print method, and hardware.

Why Large Acrylic (Perspex) Should Be at Least 5 mm

  • Rigidity & Safety: Thin acrylic (3 mm) can flex, bow, or crack when carried, hung, or bumped. 5–6 mm provides the stiffness big boards need.
  • Clean Display: Thicker sheets hang flatter, so you don’t see waves or edge warp in photos.
  • Hardware Fit: Hanging holes and stand clamps hold better in thicker acrylic, reducing stress cracks.

ABS: Looks Affordable — But Scratches Easily

ABS can be tempting on price, but it marks and scuffs quickly. For statement pieces (like your 1.8 m seating chart), those marks show in person and in photos. We reserve ABS for non-hero, short-term signage — not for premium wedding moments.

When ACM Is the Smarter Choice

ACM (Aluminium Composite) is excellent for large formats and outdoor stability:

  • Size & Weight: Rigid yet light - perfect for 100×180 cm boards.
  • Weather-Resistant: Handles breeze, temperature changes, and long days.
  • Professional Finish: Vinyl or direct-print graphics look crisp on its flat surface.

When Foamboard Works (and Its Limits)

  • Great for: Budget-friendly small indoor signs (cards box, gifts table, restroom/arrow signage).
  • Use with care: Keep away from high-traffic areas; mount to solid backers to reduce dents.
  • Not ideal for: Outdoor use, statement pieces, or anything guests may touch often.

Practical Display, Hanging & Weighting Solutions

Hanging (Welcome Boards)

  • Pre-drilled top holes with discreet chain, ribbon, or clear line.
  • Use protective grommets on acrylic to prevent stress cracks.

Floor Stands & Easels

  • Weighted easels for indoor use; rubber feet protect floors.
  • Pipe/plate bases for ACM on large formats; hidden under florals or draping.
  • Clear stand feet for acrylic keep the “floating” look.

Wind & Stability (Outdoors)

  • Prefer ACM for big pieces outdoors.
  • Add weighted bases or sandbags disguised with décor.
  • Consider micro tie-downs (clear line) at the rear for gusty venues.
